Growing up on the island of Oahu, he was one of the most decorated high school athletes in Hawaii's history. In 2008, Te'o won the inaugural high school Butkus Award, while also being named Sporting News High School Athlete of the Year. At the end of 2012, he won eight postseason awards, becoming one of the most decorated collegiate football players of all time.
One of the enduring stories of Notre Dame's 2012 season was Te'o's strong play following the death of his grandmother and girlfriend, as well as his emergence as a Heisman Trophy candidate. Te'o released a statement claiming to have been the victim of a hoax that lured him into an online relationship with a nonexistent woman.
